James Gunn, it was a name I never heard of before 2014 (yes I know he did movies before then but I wasn't aware of them), all of that changed with "Guardians of the Galaxy". DC is so inconsistent with films, they have an Oscar winner like "Joker" and then a piece of crap like "Wonder Woman: 1984", I was glad to hear this one was an excellent movie and so of course I went to see it.
Right from the start, I knew this movie would be good, I immediately starting smiling and soon starting laughing. The music gets you in the mood, the story draws you in further and the acting and the humor cements you in place for a great time at the movies. To be clear, this movie is violent (sometimes gory), has lots of bad language, some adult themes/situations and some disturbing ideas but the way it is presented you just keep laughing and enjoying yourself.
Gunn really gets some great performances here. Idris Elba is excellent, Margot Robbie KILLS IT as Harley Quinn (of course!), I liked her more in this than any of her other appearances as the character. He made me care about obscure characters like Poka Dot Man and Ratcatcher 2 and even made King Shark fun! (and yes Stallone did a good job with the voice). It's hard for me to say more without spoiling it and I don't want to do that, so I'll finish up.
A solid 8 out of 10 from me. Please don't bring your kids to this, ages 18+ for sure, it's rated R for a reason. I dearly hope Gunn gets to do more Suicide Squad movies (and possibly other DC ones), he gets the characters much more than other directors do. I found the time flew by and I would see it again in theaters (preferably high!) if I can. Stay for a during the credits and one at the very end. I give this movie a big recommend to any DC or action/comedy movie fan, just be prepared for blood, guts, and death but also for a whole %*$&* of fun!
