Initial Thoughts:

Full disclosure, I believe this was the second time I saw this movie, but it had been long enough that I had forgotten some of the details (and to take it off my Netflix list), plus I hadn’t done a review. I’ve loved and had cats my whole life, so this is an easy choice for me. Also, I’d add that while Netflix does focus too much on reality TV, they do know how to make some great documentaries, and this is one of them.

Main Points:

I’ve heard you’re either a cat person or a dog person. I’m the former and always will be. Right now, I have a wonderful 14-year-old cat named Eleanor who brings a lot of happiness and comfort to my life, and I thought of her the whole time I watched this. This is an interesting documentary about what cats are thinking, how they can be trained, why they act the way they do, and how they can form close bonds and love their owners. Really interesting stuff here, like when a cat is given a choice between their owner and a stranger, they always pick their owner. The same goes for the owner versus food or a favourite toy; the owner wins every time. I’ve personally seen a cat jump through a flaming hoop, so I know they are capable of amazing things, and I’ve seen them jump straight up and perform amazing climbing feats. Other interesting tidbits are the fact that Japanese cats act differently from American ones, and that this may even be a generational thing; it’s becoming part of their DNA! Cats have been our companions for thousands of years, and they have adapted to human behaviour/figured out how to make people care for them. The film interviews experts on cats, and one of the only complaints I had was that we didn’t see cats (and experts) from more countries. Hopefully, someday, a sequel could show that.

Final Thoughts:

When they get into how much a cat loves their owners, and how a cat reflects back your feelings, it hit me pretty hard in the feels. If you love cats, this is a must-watch; you’ll learn something, be entertained and maybe even love your cat (or adopt one) even more. A very solid 8.5 out of 10 from me. A tiny bit of coarse language here so ages 12+, do yourself a favour and watch this, you’ll be glad you did.

  • "Charles O’Keefe’s descriptions immediately pulled me in and made the characters relatable. Starting with a strong hook—when Joseph realizes he’s finally met the woman of his dreams (Casandra)—the plot stays steadily exciting throughout.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants an exciting new read, and a great escape from reality."
