Initial Thoughts:
When I saw a new Tron movie was coming out I was excited, I’ve enjoyed the franchise since 1982 and I thought the idea of bringing the game into the real world was a good idea. I was a little concerned with the ratings and reviews but I had a ticket in my account and not the time was when I liked, the morning, so I went.
Main Points:
I know that Jared Leto is a difficult person to work with (to put it mildly!) but I choose to separate the acting from the actor and he was fine in this. I’ll get the negative out of the way, the plot is pretty thin here and doesn’t make a lot of sense. This is supposed to be sci-fi but so much is left unexplained I think it veers into fantasy a lot.
That said I liked Lego’s character, same with Gillian Anderson, all of the acting was good, there is lots of good action, loads of cool special effects and while it’s perhaps not as good as “Legacy” I liked the music and I thought the sound for some scenes was really cool. While it is a likely a statement on my age I will say that I found the sound way too loud several times. I did find it a little long and I think a good 15-20 minutes could be taken out. There are a few good jokes, nice 80s references and even a philosophical discussion while two characters are on the Tron grid.
Final Thoughts:
I went in with low expectations and enjoyed this movie, to a point anyway. This should really be the end of the Tron franchise but if you stay there is a mid- credit scene that sets up a sequel. I would recommend this only to the most hard core Tron fans, even then I would say wait for it to be on streaming. While I did see it in IMAX it really wasn’t worth the money, I do, however, give it 6 out of 10 and did get some enjoyment from it. This is a good example of a popcorn movie where you need to turn off the critical part of your brain and just enjoy it for what it is, I would think being high would most likely make it better as well.
