Initial Thoughts:

As anyone who’s read my blog know I love Batman, he is my favorite comic book character and I am often in the mood to watch a movie with him in it. I have also always enjoyed Elseworlds and while this isn’t one, the idea of Batman in Aztec times intrigued me. Also this is the first R-rated Batman movie, so those two things (and it was on sale for $4) convinced me to watch it.

Main Points:

I’m a positive person, I always look for the good and I always find something to like about a movie but for this one it’s hard. I liked the first 10-15 minutes and then it just steadily goes downhill. I thought the credits were neat (I assume they are in Nahuatl but I’m not certain), there is some good animation and voicework and a couple of good action scenes. I did also like how there is some history mixed in, Hernan Cortes did invade the Aztec Kingdom and is primarily responsible for destroying it, and they have lots of cool Aztec history, culture and religion here as well. I think the biggest problem here is the plot, it’s just so poorly written that I found myself really bored after 45 minutes and then just happy when it ended. They do leave it open for a sequel but I wouldn’t be bothered to watch it. There is some violence, most of it is carefully edited but there are some disturbing scenes (human sacrifice, women and children killed) and I think Cortes said “Goddamn” and maybe even “Fuck”, so it does barely earn the R-rating.

Final Thoughts:

Please don’t let your kids watch this, it is certainly for ages 17+ for blood, violence, mature themes and coarse language. I normally always recommend a movie to someone but honestly I can’t, I suffered through this so there’s no reason for you to do so. I give this 5 out of 10 and it’s a shame because it was a cool idea, in a neat setting and period of history, it could have been really good but this is just terrible. I know there are better animated Batman movies out there, watch one of those and skip this.

  • "Charles O’Keefe’s descriptions immediately pulled me in and made the characters relatable. Starting with a strong hook—when Joseph realizes he’s finally met the woman of his dreams (Casandra)—the plot stays steadily exciting throughout.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants an exciting new read, and a great escape from reality."
