Details from IMDB:
Wolverine is recovering from his injuries when he crosses paths with the loudmouth Deadpool. They team up to defeat a common enemy.
Initial Thoughts:
It’s like I put on FB, when “Logan” came out in 2017 I thought that was it, I had an amazing Wolverine movie, what I always wanted in terms of R content and Hugh Jackman was done. I was VERY pleasantly surprised when he said he would come back once more and then the long wait to see it. I love Reynolds’ take on Deadpool too more so than almost any comic book. Putting the two together (as they’ve done many times in the comics) is sheer brilliance and now I finally got to see it onscreen! I was EXCITED for this movie, took time off work to see it Friday lunchtime and what has become a very rare thing for me happened, it lived up to my expectations (at least for the most part) and it made me smile and laugh right away.
Main Points:
This is going to be a hard one to talk about, as it’s basically nothing but spoilers after about 5 minutes and I don’t want to be the person who ruins it for someone, so I’ll be more general than specific. Deadpool is back and he had a ton of R rated fun, I was laughing and smiling right away and I did that throughout. He breaks the 4th play just like before, pokes fun at Marvel, Disney, DC, Fox Studious and of course himself. As always this is SO not for kids, so please don’t bring them, I would say ages 18+ (depending on where you live, I used to get in when I was 13-14 but it may not have been good for me!) with a TON of coarse language, a lot of gore and a ton of sexual references but no drug use (which is made fun of course!).
This movie is about giving the majority of fans what they want (I’m not the majority as I have enjoyed 95% of everything Marvel Studios has done), no more multiverse and all these different versions of characters, just bring everyone together in one timeline and go for it! Comic Book movies are often better when they are fun, with just the right amount of fan service. I think Deadpool & Wolverine are great examples of darker heroes (Deadpool is not a hero at most times!) in a lighter hearted movie. I enjoy an anti-hero tale, Batman is my favorite comic book character, but I find lately I enjoy upbeat movies more, it’s perhaps a reaction of the times we live in.
Final Thoughts:
Maybe sometime I’ll expand on this review, make it spoiler filled but for now I’ll leave it here (I’ll do at least a week before spoilers). I loved this movie, it’s fun, gory, tongue in cheek and gave me what I always wanted, Wolverine & Deadpool onscreen. I thought the acting was solid, we get a goofy/mostly useless villain and another that’s powerful, creepy and superbly acted by Emma Corrin. Reynolds did a great job with writing and acting and Shawn Levy (who’s worked with Reynolds before) brings his A game. While there are a lot of cameos, most of them don’t get much to say (some nothing) and the best ones are for people who get to stick around and contribute to the story. Nothing’s perfect of course and it could have even better but still (I honestly agreed with Deadpool himself that it was a tiny bit long), a solid 8.5 out of 10 for me. It’s the best movie Marvel Studios has done in a year or more, I hope they keep it up. If you ever enjoyed the X-Men movies or Deadpool (and of COURSE if you love Wolverine!) you NEED to see this in theater. The showing I went to people were excited, there was lots of laughing, some people clapped and there were some great conversations as people walked out, everything I could hope for with a comic book summer film, at least for this summer Marvel is BACK and I’ll all for it.
