Details from IMDB:
Original title: Extraction 2
After barely surviving his grievous wounds from his mission in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Tyler Rake is back, and his team is ready to take on their next mission.
Initial Thoughts:
This is going to be a shorter review, promise! So I saw the first one (on Netflix, they put out so much content that they have certainly improved), it was fun, had lots of action and Hemsworth did a good job, so, of course, I was going to get stoned and watch the second.
Main Points:
Yeah, I went there, this blog is primarily aimed at adults so I will talk about mature themes, like pot. I’m a big pot advocate/user and I find it enhances lots of movie viewings. If you can legally get it (and you enjoy cannabis) I would highly recommend watching this stoned, I think you’ll enjoy it much more. I’m not going to get into the plot much, it really doesn’t matter. The point of this movie is simple, Hemsworth’s character Rake (fun to say even!) gets better from terrible injuries (in the first movie, watch that too!) and gets another job to get a woman and kids out of prison from the abusive father. He’s in instantly and after about a half hour the movie switches gear into high action.
The rest of the movie is Hemsworth killing everyone (almost) and everything in sight who gets in his way. The action scenes are AWESOME and Hemsworth has some nice light, funny, and even a couple of touching moments. I said this to my wife and I’ll say it again, the whole point of this movie is excess, it is a self-aware movie and reveals in all of his pulse-pounding action and killing, that’s all it needs to do. I knew what I was going to get from this movie and it delivered, fun, a few laughs, some serious bits, and mostly a whole ton of amazing fight scenes. To give one example (and this is in the trailer so not a spoiler) there is one scene on a moving train where Rake shoots down a helicopter with a very powerful machine gun, and that’s maybe 10 seconds of the movie!
Final Thoughts:
I hope they do a third one. I admire it when writers/directors/producers/actors all can agree on what the movie is and give it to you, this is what you get here. Yes I know violence is bad and this could be seen as promoting it, sure but what about just watching a movie for fun? I just turn off the critical part of my brain and let the joy in, it works wonders for enjoyment levels. All that said I know this isn’t a masterpiece, I give it 7.5 out of 10. It’s just as good or better than the first one, and the addition of Idris Elba (and more humor) only enhances the series. I will say a few scenes get into the bloody/gory side, they could have been toned down perhaps just a tad. Please don’t let your kids watch this, ages 19+ for intense violence, coarse language, and gore. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys seeing Hemsworth have fun and just tear into people, watching it high just makes it that much better. Netflix has a good series here and I hope they continue to do it justice.
