Initial Thoughts:
It’s unfortunate that this movie isn’t doing well in theatres, I loved “Fury Road” and had high hopes for this. It’s amazing that George Miller, who’s in his 80s, has done every Mad Max movie and I was happy to have at least one more entry. I saw this as it should be seen, in IMAX at the theatres.
Main Points:
I know there are several reasons why this movie isn’t doing well, so I won’t dwell on it anymore as it’s really not relevant to this review but I will add that movies, like everything else, has become more expensive, so people have become more choosy about what they see.
As usual I’ll get the negative out of the way, at 2.5 hours I did find this on the long side, I know I say that a lot but I firmly believe most movies could be shorter and not lose anything. I think the other issue here was that the story just wasn’t as good this time, it’s harder to do a prequel as you know what happens in the broad sense, and of course know what happens with Furiosa. The action scenes, while good, also just didn’t quite measure up with “Fury Road”.
I thought that Anya Taylor-Joy is amazing and the best part of the movie. I liked Chris Hemsworth here, nice to see him play a darker character. There were some really fun action scenes that I enjoyed and the wide shots of the dessert looked amazing in IMAX. Miller’s strong warning about what will happen to the world feels even louder and more important than ever, though with so few people seeing it I fear it won’t reach enough people.
Final Thoughts:
I love for stories to go on forever and I would love to see another entry in the Mad Max saga, especially while Miller is still around to do it. If this is the end, however, I’m happy that with the ending that connects this movie very strongly to “Fury Road” and all the movies before. It’s a good ending and stay during the credits for an unusual feature, scenes from “Fury Road”. I give this 7.5 out of 10 and a strong recommendation to see this before it’s gone from theatres, the experience won’t be as good at home. Please don’t bring your kids, lots of violence, blood, some gore, coarse language and some nudity and disturbing images makes it ages 17+.
