Details from IMDB:
Heavy Metal 2000
After surviving an invasion on her peaceful homeworld, a beautiful avenger must stop a powerful psychopath from gaining immortality and rescue her kidnapped sister.
Initial Thoughts:
I don’t know about anyone else, but I have a hard time deciding what movie to watch at home. I think it’s probably because I need a movie to fit what kind of mood I’m in. Last night I was also high, and that makes it doubly hard for me to decide. So after 15 minutes, I finally decided to watch this, as I had seen Heavy Metal and I thought, how bad could the sequel really be? The answer is really awful, but I’ll post this review as a cautionary tale if nothing else.
Main Points:
It’s a good thing this movie is less than 1.5 hours, as I considered a couple of times just turning it off, but I took a break around the halfway mark and managed to finish it. While the first movie was awesome (especially when you’re high), this felt like an absolute mess, and I think if I had been sober, I would have turned it off. The animation is occasionally fine but often absolute garbage; it looks like cut scenes from a crappy video game (the movie came out 26 years ago) or cheap CGI no one cared to polish. The story makes almost no sense; the characters are paper-thin and little more than caricatures. The treatment of women here is horrendous and wildly offensive/sexist. It’s hard to believe Kevin Eastman had any involvement here, let alone the fact that it’s based on a graphic novel he did. There are maybe 2 good songs (which play during the credits), and the only connection to the first movie (aside from it being animated) is how the green energy/being is here and still corrupting all it touches. There is also a scene where a man/demon/creature forces his very long tongue down a woman’s throat, messed up shit!
Final Thoughts:
The movie is also full of nudity and has a few sex scenes (at the attempted rape scene too, if that triggers you) and is, of course, full of extreme violence and coarse language; ages 19+ and certainly not for prudes. I can only recommend this if you’re a completist and feel (like me) you need to see what happens; really, though, you should avoid this movie. As it was, I had to look for a “screener” as it wasn’t on any streaming service in Canada. I give this 5 out of 10 for some retro/slightly cool animation; all the rest is wretched. I hope there’s someday a good sequel to Heavy Metal, not this horrific offspring.
