Initial Thoughts:
I had heard about this movie when it came out, forgot about it and then heard Rebecca from Geekshow talk about on it and decided to give it a watch. I also like Glen Powell and do like to see him do comedy. So for our last night in Myrtle Beach we gave it a watch.
Main Points:
I thought this was an interesting idea for a movie, a fake hitman. Even more surprising that he is a psychology professor who leads a very ordinary, perhaps even dull, life. Glen Powell does a good job as does Adria Arjona and their chemistry onscreen is undeniable, that said the film is slow.
My wife played with her phone and got up several times, barely paying any attention for most of the film. I watched it all but I do agree for a comedy it was slower paced and had some truly hard to swallow moments (since this is loosely based on a real person). I really liked the message that we are a struggle in ourselves between doing what is safe/familiar/routine and being able to change and do something exciting/different with your life.
I really liked the use of philosophy/psychology in the movie and I think he explained ID/Ego/Superego well. I’m not sure about this but I think the use of the word “contract” here (and it’s brought up several times) may be related to BDSM/kinky sex/consent but that could also be just my imagination. It is a strange comedy as murder is done casually (twice!) and both characters have no issue with it, the idea that some people are simply past the point of redemption deserve death is not one I’m comfortable with but I do understand the concept behind it.
Final Thoughts:
As stated the film drags in spots, could have been at least 20 minutes less. I enjoyed the end and there are a couple of twists I didn’t see coming. I give it 7.5 out of 10 and give it a mild recommendation. Certainly not for kids, some violence, lots of coarse language and some sexual content makes it ages 17+.
