Initial Thoughts:
I’m not much for the holiday season, I know that there are people who love Xmas and go all out but that’s never been me and the older I get the less I care about it, that said I’m not a total Grinch and I do enjoy some aspects. I do enjoy some Xmas music, the lights and a limited amount of visiting with friends and family, plus I do like watching something Xmas related around those days. All that meant yesterday after snowblowing (we had a snowstorm here Xmas day) I was in the mood for something to help me get a little in the holiday spirit and I realized I had never watched “The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special”, and gave it a watch.
Main Points:
Lego has done a good job with their Star Wars movies and shows, they are fun, dare I even say whimsical, short, creative and have lots of fan service/nostalgia (which I enjoy). While I would have liked to have more of the original voice actors (notably missing are Harrison Ford and Mark Hamil), the actors they do have do a good job with these iconic characters. I was happy to see that Lucas was involved and yes this does have a connection to the famously bad Star Wars Holiday Special from 1978.
I always thought that Rey was a great character who got screwed over in “Rise of Skywalker” so I really liked to see her as the main character here with an interesting quest. I liked how she is training Finn as well and of course getting to revisit great battles along with learning an important lesson about being a Jedi master.
There were plenty of laughs, loads of nostalgia and fun fight scenes. I’m glad that there is now a good Star Wars holiday special. Good animation, good voice work and a fun story all added up to a nice holiday movie.
Final Thoughts:
For a change I can say this is a kid friendly movie and is good family fun. I give it 7.5 out of 10 and would recommend it to anyone who likes a light-hearted Lego movie. This is a great example of a creator/writer playing with toys (like they do on “The Mandolorian”) but of course here it’s perfect as Lego are literally toys! I would have liked it to be a little longer, as much as I like shorter films 48 minutes is maybe a little light. Overall though I had fun with this and look to see what Lego/Disney does next.
