Initial Thoughts:
I thought about going to Venom: The Last Dance last weekend but the reviews were rough and I couldn’t convince anyone to go, so I decided to watch this instead at home. In contrast this got great reviews and it is was still in theatre here I did get too see a current movie that other people saw in theatres. Also of course it has some great actors like Lupita Nyong’o and Pedro Pascal, so Sunday night I gave it a watch.
Main Points:
Dreamworks does it again! This movie was so damn good. Animation is wonderful, an excellent story, wonderful voice acting and just so heartfelt and touching. It also says a lot about the relationship of humans with technology/robots and animals, along with what family really means, what it means to be a friend and what is happiness. All that said I did find the first 10-20 minutes a little on the slow side but that could be more a factor of I don’t have the patience I used to. Be warned there are several tear jerker moments, I’m glad I saw this at home as it is nice to have privacy when you watch a very emotional movie. The film is also full of humor and has some great action scenes too. Listen closely and you’ll hear lots of great actors like Matt Berry, Mark Hamil, Bill Nighy, Ving Rhames and Catherine O’Hara.
Final Thoughts:
As you may have noticed I don’t do overly long reviews (most of the time anyway) and I try not to do any spoilers. If this is still in theatres you should go see it, or at least give it a watch at home. It is nice for a change that I can say bring your kids! At least if they are 9+ (depending on the child of course). There is a tiny plot point that is never addressed but that’s something that a lot of people may not even notice. I give this a very solid 8.5 out of 10 and would highly recommend it. The movie raises some important points about our reliance on technology and the importance of not losing touch with what is important and the beauty of nature/animals. I teared up at least 3 times and that’s certainly the sign of a very special movie, I’m sure this will win awards and it certainly deserves it. I watched this on Cineplex digital and it was well worth the $22.
