Initial Thoughts:
Let’s get the obvious part over with. I’m not some incel shithead who is going to destroy this movie because it’s about a female superhero; that’s just stupidity and ignorance. I will say, however, that I’ve never been a big fan of Supergirl, never followed a comic book series, and never saw the 1984 movie with Helen Slater, but after a glowing review from Rebecca on Geekshow (and TV Show in Space), I decided to go see it today.
Main Points:
I should add that while there were only 8-10 people in the cinema when I saw it, it was 11:30 in the morning, so I’m hoping it does ok at the box office. Other than going into this movie already hating the character, I am not sure what all the negative press/reviews about this are for. Milly Alcock is excellent as Kara/Supergirl, Krypto is always fun, and Jason Momoa is an excellent Lobo, way better than he ever was as Aquaman. The story is fairly fast-paced, and there were only a couple of moments I felt could have been tightened or taken out. Good special effects, especially the battles with a lot of flying, good action and nice character development.
I will add, however, that I thought the story could have used some work; it is on the simplistic side, and I missed no end-credit scene (which I’ve come to expect from superhero/comic book movies). I also think that this is a movie that women will enjoy more than men, and as such, my enjoyment was perhaps more limited. All of that said, this is a good debut for Supergirl (and for Lobo), and it leaves me excited about where the DC movieverse will take us next. Clark/Kal-El does have a couple of cameos, which are fun, and I liked it when Kara talks about him and explains the difference between their attitudes. Supergirl here is different from the character we’ve seen before, more gritty and a little darker, but still a good character who’s just been through shit/trauma and loves her dog.
Final Thoughts:
Ignore the haters and go see this movie in IMAX! I’m glad I did, and it’s not likely to be crowded for you. As I said, I did have some issues, and I don’t love the character (I really do need to read the Tom King run on her), so I’ll give it 7.5 out of 10 and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys superhero movies/Supergirl. There are some good laughs, exciting fight scenes, fun cameos and a good message of forgiveness and friendship. I felt that the PG-13 rating was holding this movie back, especially Lobo, but I would say it is fine for ages 14+. I hope Milly can ignore all the haters online; you should, too.
