Initial Thoughts:

I had heard about this movie, I believe it was through Rebecca on Geekshow, and as I often agree with her reviews decided to give it watch for our Saturday movie night. It was also streaming on Amazon Prime, so it was one of the easy options for watching.

Main Points:

This is a very dark/satirical take on teen movies and comedies. I thought everyone involved did a good job but I found it hard to get excited about the movie or any of the characters. I think also that this movie made me feel old and out of touch, I didn’t know a single person involved and I’m certainly not the target audience. All that said I know that this movie deals with important issues, just in a subversive and unusual way. There were some funny parts, a few that made me think but a lot of it was the awkward humor that produces more uncomfortable laughter and not usually what I like to see. As my wife said I thought there would be more fight club but it had a lot of teenage drama, which I know is to be expected, and I found it to be so over the top that it veers onto the side of ridiculousness more often than not. And yes of course I know that a lot of this movie is center at teenage women who are either gay, or struggling with their identity or sexuality or just how hard it is to be a woman in society, and while I can appreciate all these issues it’s hard to be to identify with them.

Final Thoughts:

All of that negativity aside I enjoyed this movie and I hope there are more with women shown as strong and the main characters. I think one of the best parts of this is that it showed just how flawed we all are, how we all struggle to be happy and remain true to ourselves (at least the decent people do). Yes I get it, this movie is a parody but it is shedding light on how messed up the world/society is and how we need to treat women and especially LBGTQ as regular people who deserve respect and happiness like everyone else. I give this 7.5 out of 10 and would recommend it to anyone who doesn’t mind some violence, with blood, a lot of coarse language and some sexual situations in the dark comedies. It is a good length and just 1.5 hours, just please don’t let kids watch this, ages 18+.

"Charles O’Keefe’s descriptions immediately pulled me in and made the characters relatable. Starting with a strong hook—when Joseph realizes he’s finally met the woman of his dreams (Casandra)—the plot stays steadily exciting throughout.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants an exciting new read, and a great escape from reality."
