Initial Thoughts:
Like a lot of people I had started to lose faith in Marvel movies, Eternals and Antman: Quantumania made me wonder if the franchise was headed in the right direction. This movie had some negative reviews but after it was number 1 at the box office, surprising people with over $100 million open, I had a lot more faith that Marvel was back on track and went to see it last week.
Main Points:
I’m I went with my instincts and not listened to the critics, this is a good movie. I thought everyone involved did a good job, Anthony Mackie is excellent as it Danny Ramirez, Harrison Ford and Giancarlo Esposito. Apparently the script had changes made at least three times and while its a good tale, I wished they had done more with the Leader. To say anymore I’ll do the usual SPOILER ALERT, the big problem here is that the Leader, Samuel Sterns, had one plan for revenge and once that failed he had no recourse and gave himself up! Very disappointing for someone who is supposed to be brilliant. That said I enjoyed this movie, the fight scenes are a lot of fun, there are some good twists and turns and of course Red Hulk!
It was a lot of fun to see Harrison Ford as Red Hulk and I thought they did it well, I like little touches like how he would get so hot that he would set fire to things around him, very comic accurate! Of course it’s also great that we get to see a Black superhero as the main character for Black history month, representation and diversity is important now more than ever. I saw this in IMAX 3D and I think it makes the fight scenes better, I would recommend you do the same if you can see in that way in a theatre near you.
Final Thoughts:
Marvel is back on track and I’m really looking forward to “Thunderbolts*” and “Fantastic Four”. I enjoyed this movie and would give it a higher rating if the villain hadn’t been given the short shrift. I give it a 7.5 out of 10 and would recommend it to any Marvel fan. There is also some good dialogue in this movie that reflects a little of the times we are in, which is good to see and will hopefully get people thinking. There is a post-credit scene that gives one of the most vague warnings I’ve seen in a while. Not for young children, ages 14+. I’ve seen every Marvel movie in a theatres (most of the Sony ones don’t count, only Spider-Man) and I’ll continue to do so, hopefully you will too.
