Initial Thoughts:

Google gives me results every day of things I often search for but sometimes I just get weird random stuff and for some reason I got a website that mentioned this movie by Mike Judge. Judge is of course most well known for doing “Beavis and Butt-Head” and as I’ve always liked that (and enjoyed another one of his movies called “Office Space”) we decided to get stoned last night and give this a watch.

Main Points:

I like the actors in this, Jason Bateman is always funny as it Kristen Wiig but this movie is strange! I assume that Judge was going for awkward/uncomfortable humor but most of the time it falls flat. As my wife also pointed out, and I agree, for a movie that was only 1.5 hours the pacing is really slow, very little happens for about half of the movie.

There are a few laughs here, Wiig and Bateman in particular and there is a great surprise towards the end of the movie that really had me laughing. The drug scenes are a laugh and I did like con-woman character, played well by Mila Kunis. One of the running jokes is that there are all these annoying/stupid characters who never know when to shut up and it has some moments, I also like some of the office scenes (and J.K. Simmons is amusing as a non-caring shit executive).

Final Thoughts:

I wasn’t stoned enough for this movie and my wife fell asleep, so I can’t give it more than a 6 out of 10. As mentioned there is one surprise which made me laugh out loud but you are waiting almost the entire movie for it. Of course please don’t let your kids see this, some violence, lots of coarse language, drug use and some suggestive/sexual dialogue, ages 18+. I will say perhaps a reason to see this is Affleck’s character, it is amusing to see him play someone obsessed with drugs and constantly pushing them on others. If you love Mike Judge, and some of these actors, I would maybe give it a watch but honestly I’m sure you could find a better comedy. There is a post-credit scene that was a laugh and gives a good ending to one of the only smart/likable characters, which is worth waiting for.

"Charles O’Keefe’s descriptions immediately pulled me in and made the characters relatable. Starting with a strong hook—when Joseph realizes he’s finally met the woman of his dreams (Casandra)—the plot stays steadily exciting throughout.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants an exciting new read, and a great escape from reality."
