Initial Thoughts:

My wife is a fan of Formula 1 and while I’m not a sports guy, I have been to a Formula 1 event in Montreal and while I can’t sit through a full race on TV, I will watch it for a little while. I had also heard Rebecca from Geekshow talk about this movie, she enjoyed it, and of course I have always loved Brad Pitt, so we went and saw this on Canada Day.

Main Points:

The races scenes in this are exciting and really well done. I also thought Brad Pitt does a good job, with Javier Bardem perhaps doing a little better as a supporting character. I enjoyed the humor here and it is always nice to see the older guy shows up/shows the new guy what’s what and that he’s still got it after all. I saw this in IMAX though I don’t think it would be mainly sound that would be superior to a regular showing.

There is a surprising amount of humor here, which I quite enjoyed. There is a lots of product placement but really, what else did you expect from a F1 movie? I thought a few parts of the movie were predictable/ham-fisted but there are plenty of good racing scenes to help you forget about it. I would say, however, that is too long, I think a good 45 minutes could have been cut without any negative effect.

Final Thoughts:

For 62 Brad Pitt is in great shape and still can do a good job on the bad boy/rebel role. While I think someday he’ll win an Oscar for Best Actor, I can’t see it being for this. I do respect him for getting in the F1 car and doing 197 mph! As for the movie, however, I give it a 7 out of 10. Racing scenes rule, the plot is not the best and it’s too long. If you a love racing movie I would recommend seeing this in theatre, not for kids with coarse language, some violence and sexual situations, ages 13+.

"Charles O’Keefe’s descriptions immediately pulled me in and made the characters relatable. Starting with a strong hook—when Joseph realizes he’s finally met the woman of his dreams (Casandra)—the plot stays steadily exciting throughout.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants an exciting new read, and a great escape from reality."
