Initial Thoughts:
I’ll be honest, I had a Cineplex Digital Code to use, one of the last ones sadly and there wasn’t anything new that appealed to me, so I went for this. I am, of course, a huge comic book fan and I had played the game, so while I knew the reviews weren’t great on Sunday night I gave this a watch.
Main Points:
This movie makes some odd choices. Green Lantern is in it, but he is voiced by Brian T. Delaney, and yet someone who played Green Arrow on TV, Justin Hartley, voices Superman/Clark! All I could think of when I watched him was he should have been Oliver Queen/Green Arrow. Everyone here does do a good job with the voicework, there is just not much story and it’s really far fetched.
I know it’s based on a video game (and graphic novels) but I would have made some different choices. This is in the trailer, so not a spoiler in my mind. Superman/Clark is tricked into killing Lois, and their unborn child, and snaps so bad that he kills the Joker, quite brutally. This made sense and I could see it happening but later on he just turns into a cold blooded killer as his last connection to humanity is gone, another death I won’t spoil. I’m being really negative though, there is some good animation and some good jokes and it was very short, so I did get some enjoyment. I also thought that Anson Mount did a good job as Batman/Bruce Wayne and I really liked seeing Plastic Man getting a fair bit of screen time (he’s a mostly ignored character in the DC universe).
Final Thoughts:
This movie is rated R for a reason, there is a lot of blood, a couple of gory scenes and some suggestive language, please don’t let your kids watch this. I would say ages 17+. If you’re a hard core DC fan (and liked the game Injustice) I would give this a mild recommend, just don’t have high expectations. I give it 6 out of 10 and would only say to watch it if you can get it for free, or like $1.
