Initial Thoughts:
As I’ve said many times on this blog, I’ve always been fascinated with sex and so I continue to learn about it. I was searching for a movie about BDSM/kink and I found this one. It got great reviews and the fact that is has a Canadian director was a nice bonus (Canada strong! 🇨🇦) so of course I bought a digital copy and watched it today.
Main Points:
This documentary was excellent. I really enjoyed it and I hope that Todd Max Carey will continue to do more films about BDSM/ kink. I really liked how it was such a authentic feeling movie not Hollywood at all. He interviews four people to female dominatrix, one male sub and a woman who discovers BDSM for the first time.
Of course, I have to add that this film has quite a bit of nudity, a fair bit of course language, and what many would consider extreme sexual practices, like breath-play, so this would certainly be ages 21+, and is certainly not for everyone. The film does a wonderful job showing how much there is to BDSM besides the sex, how sex can not be a part of it at all. I like how it starts off with the info that many studies have shown that 33% of people are either kinky or very much interested in it. He did a great job showcasing people that enjoy BDSM/kink as regular people and for many is just something they do in privacy of their own home. He explains the most important part of BDSM, consent, very well and I thought that having the movie go through the stages of scene: 1. communication, 2. setting the scene, 3. and 4. Aftercare. I also really loved the last 10-15 minutes when everyone interviewed talks about the people they have met in the BDSM/kink world, what it means to them, how it’s improved their lives and how anyone who is imaginative/creative enjoys kinky sex so much more than vanilla. I thought including a woman who was new to BDSM/kink was a really smart idea. You could tell that she always wanted to be a dominatrix and that by doing this retreat/workshop it awakened the desire in her. It also showed how someone who was very skeptical (critical too as she thinks people who enjoy kink could be damaged in some way) came to love and embrace her own kinky nature in just a few days, it showed that if many people were open minded and was introduced the right way then they also might grow to love it.
You can tell that this is a subject that the director is interested in as he approaches it with so much care, understanding and respect. Sadly, two of the people in this film have since passed, one of them taking her own life. I I thought it was very strong of him to finish this film as a tribute to his partner, January Seraph, and I agree with Todd that she would have enjoyed the film and wanted it finished.
Final Thoughts:
If you have any interest in BDSM/kink, I would strongly recommend watching this very informative and interesting documentary. You have to pay for it on smaller website here. My only complaints are that I wish it was longer, run time was less than an hour and a half. For me there was also the issue of trying to get rid of the subtitles while streaming to my TV, but that is a very minor issue. I give this a very solid 8.5 out of 10, support a Canadian Indy director if you can handle the subject matter, I promise you won’t regret it.
