Transformers One
The untold origin story of Optimus Prime and Megatron, better known as sworn enemies, but who once were friends bonded like brothers who changed the fate of Cybertron forever.
Initial Thoughts:
Transformers takes me back to my childhood. I watched the cartoon, had lots of the toys and read the comics (which started with Marvel and later went to IDW), suffice it so say I used to be a big fan and have remained a fan most of my life. Like lots of people I became very disappointed/mad with the Michael Bay movies but Bumblebee a few years ago I got hopeful again and so when this came out, and got good reviews, I made sure to go in theatres.
Main Points:
I wish I could have seen this in IMAX and been high but it was already left IMAX and getting high and getting back and forth to a movie is not easy for me to arrange (especially as Uber doesn’t even come to my street!), so I saw it in regular. This movie was a ton of fun, I was laughing and smiling within 5 minutes. This is how Transformers movies were meant to be, animated! I think live-action was never the right way to go.
In terms of voice work everyone does a good job, it was great to hear Steve Buscemi as Starscream and of course Scarlett Johansson as Elita and Chris Hemsworth as Optimus Prime (most of the movie Orion Pax). I really liked this new origin for the Transformers, especially how they explained the Matrix of leadership, the Autobots and Decepticons and the Primes. Cybertron felt much like a living, breathing world than it did in any other iteration and the idea of cogs being linked to not only transforming but their personality was another great idea.
Final Thoughts:
At the just past 1.5 hour mark this was the perfect length for a Transformers movie, stick around for a mid-credit scene that was a good bit of fun. Laughs, excitement, excellent animation, a good story with good characters and voice work, there’s lots to love here. If this is near you please go see in theatres before it’s gone, it will look better on the big screen VS at home. I can be different from my usual reviews (as I don’t see a lot of kid-friendly movies) and say go ahead and bring your kids! There is some violence but I would say ages 10+ (depending on the child of course). I give this a solid 8 out of 10 and would highly recommend it to any Transformers fan or just anyone who likes a fun animated movie.
